Killing Zombies in Portland

We have a talk station across the hall, AM970 that’s run by a pretty awesome dude who takes chances that most radio won’t. His name is Rick Emerson and he’s on Mon-Fri 11am-3pm. His producer Sarah is also my co-host on The Punk Show. He did a great broadcast on 8.8.08, if you didn’t hear it, you can listen to it here.

He’s not your typical radio guy and the latest series he’s producing is awesome.Recalling the days of live radio dramas, he’s assembled a very talented crew to write episodes that air every other Sunday. They’re called “A.Z.” and are based around life in Portland at the end of the world, the zombie apocalypse. Aaron Duran, Jayesunn Krump, Bobby Roberts, James Robinson, Bobbie Winchell and other rotating case members make it all happen…we’re talkin’ full production folks, writing the scripts, pulling off live sound effects, live everything.

In last night’s episode I played Hanan and got to brain some boy-scout zombies alongside the rest of the cast. You can listen to it here. I highly recommend you check out the series, even if I had no part, I would tell you to listen. They are fantastic and you should listen to the ones that have already taken place. In addition to the episodes of A.Z. there are 2 other series “The Crimson Mist” and “Kimmy Waters and the Songbirds of Sing-Sing.” You can listen to all of them under the “CBS Radio Theater” headline here.

I used to listen to Emerson religiously. In fact, I’m currently reading a book he recommended on his show. But, after awhile, I realized his humor was very unoriginal and incredibly mean-spirited.

But did you listen to the Zombie episode?? I find Rick to be very honest and although I don’t agree with all that he says, I guess I like that he says exactly what he thinks, regardless. That’s rare in radio these days.

No, I haven’t really listened in a couple of years. I tune in once in awhile when I’m free of such impenetrable forces as the walls and glass the 970 AM transmitter can’t break through and, within minutes, he’s badmouthing other shows, making fun of the trendhoppers he emulates and generally engaging in what I believe to be bad radio. I deal by choosing not to listen to it. I met him once and thought he was a little full of himself but I guess that’s kind of a prerequisite if you’re a talk show host.
